Tradition Keeps The Mat Safe

Dojo

Simple standards, taken seriously. They are how a traditional academy stays focused, humble, and safe for everyone.

/ Respect
  • Bow to the center of the mat when you enter.
  • Bow to the center of the mat when you exit.
  • Keep a respectful posture in the dojo.
  • Refer to all black belt instructors as “professor”, and brown/purple belt instructors as “coach.”
  • When fixing your gi or belt, face the wall.
  • Classes begin with a formal bow to the professor(s), with students lining up in descending order by rank.
  • Classes end with a formal bow to the masters and then to the professor(s).
  • If you are late, sit by the side of the mat and wait for permission to join.
  • If you need to leave the mat or leave class early, ask permission from the professor.
  • During technique demonstrations, sit silently with your back to the wall and legs crossed.
  • Bow and shake hands with your partner before and after training.
  • Students are not permitted on the mat outside their designated class time.
  • Do not boast about winning or defeating a training partner.
  • Sparring is meditation, not competition.
  • Do not injure your training partners.
