How Soon Should Kids Start Training Jiu Jitsu?

The ideal age for a child to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) can vary depending on factors such as the child’s physical development, maturity, and interest in the sport. However, many BJJ academies and instructors have classes specifically designed for children as young as 3 to 6 years old.

At this age, children can begin to develop basic motor skills, coordination, and body awareness, which are essential for BJJ. Additionally, BJJ can provide numerous benefits for children, including improved discipline, self-confidence, physical fitness, and self-defense skills.

It’s important to note that the primary focus for young children in BJJ should be on having fun, learning basic techniques, and developing a love for the sport rather than intense competition. Classes for young children usually emphasize cooperative drills, games, and age-appropriate techniques to keep them engaged and motivated.

When considering enrolling a child in BJJ, it’s advisable to visit local academies and talk to instructors who have experience teaching children. They can provide guidance on the best age to start based on the child’s individual characteristics and readiness. At RGA Frisco, kids classes are split by age — 3–6 and 7–12 — and you can watch or try a class free.

Ultimately, the decision to start BJJ should be made in consultation with the child’s parents or guardians, taking into account the child’s physical abilities, interest, and overall well-being.
